Counting out loud from 1 to 10 is a great start, but it isn't the same as knowing how many things are in front of you. Real counting means touching or pointing to each object once, saying one number for each, and knowing that the last number you say is the total. These free counting worksheets practice exactly that.

There are two pages: one for counting 1 to 5 and one for 6 to 10. Each row shows a group of pictures and three numbers. Your child counts the group and circles the matching number.

What your child practices

  • One-to-one counting. One number for each apple or star, no skipping and no double counting.
  • The last number is the total. After counting, your child picks the number that tells "how many."
  • Number recognition. Finding the right numeral among three choices.
  • Small steps up. The first page stays within 5; the second page moves on to bigger groups from 6 to 10.

How to use the counting pages

  1. Start with the 1–5 page. Even if your child can count higher, it builds confidence and shows how the page works.
  2. Touch and count. Ask your child to put a finger on each picture while counting. For the bigger rows, they can make a small dot on each one as they go.
  3. Ask "How many?" After the count, ask the question and let them find the number to circle.
  4. Check together. Count the row once more together. If the circle is wrong, just recount; there's no need to correct it for them.

Make counting part of the day

Worksheets work best next to real objects. A few easy ways to practice:

  • Count snacks into a bowl: "Let's put in five crackers."
  • Count stairs out loud as you walk up.
  • Set the table and count the forks.
  • Line up toy cars and ask how many there are, then add one more.

When the 6–10 page feels easy, try covering the number choices with a sticky note and asking your child to write the number instead.

Common counting mix-ups

Counting faster than pointing. Slow down together and count in a whisper so the finger and the voice stay together.

Counting the same picture twice. Counting from left to right in a line, as the rows on these pages are laid out, helps a lot.

Mixing up 6 and 9. Very common. Point out that 6 has its round part at the bottom, like a belly.
