Most preschoolers meet the alphabet the same way: a song, a few favorite letters (usually the ones in their own name) and a lot of pointing at signs. Worksheets don't replace any of that. What a good alphabet page adds is a quiet, focused few minutes where your child looks closely at one letter, hears its sound and moves a pencil along its shape.

These free alphabet worksheets do exactly that, one letter per page. We're starting with A, B and C, and each page has the same simple layout, so your child knows what to do after the first try.

What your child practices

  • Letter recognition. A big dotted capital and lowercase letter at the top, then rows of both to trace.
  • Letter sounds. Each letter comes with a picture that starts with that sound: apple, ball, cat.
  • Pencil control. Dashed outlines on writing lines show where a letter starts, stops and sits.
  • Uppercase and lowercase together. Seeing A and a on one page helps children connect the two shapes.

How to use the alphabet pages

  1. Say it first. Point to the picture and say the word slowly together: "a-a-apple." Ask what sound comes first.
  2. Trace with a finger. Before using a pencil, let your child trace the big letters at the top with a finger. It's a no-pressure warm-up.
  3. Trace a row or two. Start at the solid letter on the left of each row. Two rows is plenty for a three-year-old; older children can do the whole page.
  4. Color the picture. Finish with the fun part. It gives the page a clear end and something to show off.

Tips that make letter practice easier

Keep it short. Five to ten minutes is a great session at this age. Stop while it's still fun and leave the rest of the page for tomorrow.

Use a chunky crayon or a triangle pencil. Thick tools are easier for small hands to hold and control than thin pencils.

Don't worry about neat. Wobbly lines are normal. Praise the effort and the starting point ("You started at the top, nice!") instead of the result.

Print a second copy or use a sheet protector. Slide the page into a plastic sleeve and use a dry-erase marker. Your child can trace the same letter again and again.

Go letter by letter, not A to Z in a week. One letter every few days, mixed with everyday letter spotting on cereal boxes and street signs, sticks better than a rush through the whole alphabet.

Which letter comes next?

You don't have to go in ABC order. Many parents start with the letters in their child's name, because those letters already mean something to them. We are adding more letters to this series; for now, A, B and C below are ready to print.
