Hearing the first sound in a word is one of the most important early reading skills. Before children can read "cat," they need to hear that it starts with /c/. These free beginning sounds worksheets give your child lots of practice: say the picture name, listen to the first sound, and circle the right letter.
What your child practices
- Hearing the first sound in a word.
- Matching sounds to letters.
- Letter recognition in lowercase, the letters children see most in books.
The three pages
- Beginning Sounds 1: apple, ball, cat, dog, egg, fish.
- Beginning Sounds 2: goat, hat, igloo, kite, lion, moon.
- Beginning Sounds 3: nest, pig, rabbit, sun, van, zebra.
Each picture has three letters to choose from, and exactly one is right.

Phonics Fun: Beginning Sounds Worksheets
Alphabet pages where children color the pictures that start with each letter, plus pages on short and long vowel sounds.
How to use the beginning sounds pages
- Name the pictures together first, so your child uses the same word you mean (a "van," not a "car").
- Stretch the first sound: "mmm-moon."
- Look at the three letters and say each sound.
- Circle the matching letter.
Beginning sounds games
- I spy: "I spy something that starts with /b/."
- Sound basket: collect toys that start with the same sound.
- Silly names: change the first sound of family names: "Bommy, Pommy, Mommy!"
- Snack sounds: "Would you like a /b/…banana?"
Tip: sounds, not letter names
Say /b/ (a short "buh"), not "bee." Children need to connect letters to the sounds they make in words.
