Color by number pages feel like magic to young children: you follow the numbers, and a picture slowly appears. These free color by number pages for preschool are mystery pictures. Every square has a number, and coloring each number with its color reveals a heart, a tree, a sailboat or a little house.
What your child practices
- Number recognition with 1, 2, 3 and 4.
- Color words: red, yellow, green, blue and brown.
- Following a key, an early step toward reading charts and maps.
- Coloring inside a square, good fine motor practice.
How to use the color by number pages
- Color the key first. Next to each number there's an empty circle. Color it with the matching crayon. Now your child has a color key they can check without reading.
- Pick one number at a time. Color all the 1s, then all the 2s.
- Guess the picture as it appears.
- Take breaks. These pages have a lot of squares; it's fine to finish over two days.

Which picture to start with
Start with the heart: it uses only two colors. The tree uses three colors, and the sailboat and house use four.
Tips
Use crayons or colored pencils, not markers. Markers can bleed through and mix colors.
Big squares first. If the squares feel small, enlarge the page when printing, or let your child just dot each square instead of filling it.
