Most children can point to a few colors early on, but connecting each color to its name, and later to the written word, takes time and a lot of everyday practice. Colors are also a great way to build vocabulary and sorting skills.
These free colors worksheets for preschool use a simple "color by word" idea: your child reads (or is helped to read) a color word and colors the picture to match.
What your child practices
- Naming colors and matching them to real crayons.
- Recognizing color words such as red, blue and yellow.
- Coloring with control, staying mostly inside a shape.
How to use the color pages
- Set out only the crayons you need. Fewer choices make it easier.
- Color the key first. Each page starts with a row of color words and empty circles. Color each circle with the matching crayon. Now your child has their own color key.
- Read the color word under each picture. Check the key if you need to.
- Color the picture. Inside the lines is nice, but not required.

Color games for preschoolers
- Color sorting. Sort toys, socks or blocks into color piles.
- I spy a color. "I spy something blue…"
- Color walk. Pick one color and find as many things in that color as you can on a walk.
- Mixing magic. Mix yellow and blue paint and watch green appear.
When do children learn color names?
It varies a lot. Many children know several colors by age 3 and most basic colors by 4, but mixing up names is common for a while. Keep naming colors in everyday talk; practice does the rest.
