Mazes are one of those activities kids happily do again and again. They're also sneaky practice: holding a pencil, staying inside lines, planning ahead and not giving up when you hit a dead end. These free printable mazes for kids go from a tiny 4×4 maze to a bigger 8×8 one.

What your child practices

  • Pencil control: drawing a line without crossing the walls.
  • Planning: looking ahead to find the path.
  • Persistence: backing up and trying again after a dead end.

The four mazes

  • Bus to the House, a 4×4 maze for first tries (around age 3).
  • Dog to the Ball, an easy 5×5 maze.
  • Cat to the Fish, a 6×6 maze.
  • Kite to the Cloud, an 8×8 maze for older preschoolers and kindergarteners.

Every maze has exactly one path from start to finish, and every corner of the maze can be reached.

How to use the mazes

  1. Find the start and the finish together before starting.
  2. Trace the path with a finger first. It's easier to back out of a dead end without a pencil line.
  3. Then use a crayon or pencil. Thick crayons are easier for young children.
  4. Celebrate the finish! Then try the next size up.

Tips

Dead ends are part of the fun. If your child gets stuck, ask "Where else could you go?" instead of showing the way.

Reuse the mazes. Slide a page into a sheet protector and use a dry-erase marker.
