Fine motor skills are the small movements of the hands and fingers: holding a crayon, using scissors, picking up a bead. They make everyday things easier, from zipping a coat to writing a name, and they grow with practice.
These free printable fine motor activities give your child three different kinds of practice: two mazes (an easy one and a bigger one), a scissor cutting page and a dot art page.
What your child practices
- Mazes: planning a path and keeping a crayon between the lines.
- Cutting lines: opening and closing scissors while the other hand turns the paper.
- Dot art: placing a dot marker, sticker or fingertip right on each circle.
How to use the fine motor pages
- Pick one activity per session. Short and focused works better than doing everything at once.
- Start with dot art for younger children. It needs the least control.
- Use child-safe scissors for the cutting lines, and sit with your child the whole time.
- Try mazes with a finger first, then with a crayon.

Fine motor activities with things at home
- Tear paper into strips and glue them into a collage.
- Pick up pom-poms with clothespins or kitchen tongs.
- Thread big beads or cut straws onto a shoelace.
- Squeeze and roll playdough into "snakes" and "balls."
- Peel stickers and put them on dots drawn on paper.
Scissor safety
Always supervise cutting. Show your child the "thumb up" hold and how to keep the helper hand away from the blades. Short cutting sessions are best; tired hands get careless.
