Name each shape and count its sides or corners together.
Trace with a finger, then with a crayon.
Find it in the room. After each shape, look for a real one nearby.
Finish with dots. On the dot art page, your child dots each circle around the square and counts the dots.

Shape activities at home

Shape hunt. Walk through the house and find three circles, three squares and three rectangles.
Snack shapes. Cut sandwiches or cheese into triangles and squares.
Tape shapes. Make big shapes on the floor with painter's tape and walk along their sides.
Playdough shapes. Roll "snakes" and bend them into shapes.

Which shapes first?

Most children learn the circle first, then the square and the triangle. Rectangles, ovals, stars and hearts can come next. There's no need to rush to 3D shapes; flat shapes are plenty for preschool.
