Once children can count out loud, the next step is understanding that numbers come in order and each one is "one more" than the last. Missing numbers worksheets practice exactly that: your child looks at a row of numbers and works out which ones are missing.
There are two free pages: missing numbers from 1 to 10, and missing numbers up to 20.
What your child practices
- Number order: what comes before and after.
- Counting on from any number, not just from 1.
- Writing numbers in the empty boxes.
How to use the missing numbers pages
- Read each row out loud, saying "hmm" for the empty boxes: "1, 2, hmm, 4, 5."
- Ask what's missing. Most children can hear it before they can see it.
- Write the number in the box. Younger children can say it while you write.
- Check by counting the whole row again.

Fall Number Sequencing Worksheets
31 fall-themed pages on number order and missing numbers for kindergarten, US Letter size.
Which page to start with
Start with Missing Numbers 1–10. The first rows have just one missing number, and later rows have two or three. Move on to Missing Numbers to 20 when your child can count to 20 out loud. The teen numbers (11–19) are tricky because their names don't sound like how they're written, so take your time.
Number order games
- Number line hop. Write 1–10 in chalk outside and hop along, calling out each number.
- What's missing? Lay out number cards 1–10, ask your child to close their eyes, and take one away.
- Before and after. "What comes after 6? What comes before 6?" Great for car rides.
- Calendar counting. Count the days on a calendar together each morning.
