Number recognition means seeing a numeral, like 6, and knowing its name. It's different from counting: a child might count to 20 out loud and still not recognize 6 on a page. These number recognition activities and free worksheets help connect the shape of each number to its name.

What your child practices

  • Spotting a number among other numbers.
  • Telling look-alikes apart, especially 6 and 9.
  • Matching numbers to quantities on the tracing page.

The three free pages

Find the Number 2: color or circle every 2 in the grid, then count how many you found (there are 8).

Find the Number 6: there are 10 sixes hidden among other numbers, including some 9s that look very similar.

Trace Numbers 0 to 4: count the hearts next to each number, then trace it.

Number recognition activities for home

  • Number hunt. Look for numbers on doors, clocks, the microwave and license plates.
  • Elevator helper. Let your child find and press the right floor number.
  • Parking lot. Write numbers on paper "parking spots" and park toy cars on the number you call.
  • Number slap. Spread number cards on the table, call a number and see who slaps it first.
  • Remote control. Ask your child to find a number on the TV remote or a phone keypad.

Tips

Work on a few numbers at a time. Start with 1–5 and add more when those feel easy.

Mix-ups are normal. 6 and 9 and 2 and 5 are commonly confused in preschool. Point out what makes them different.
