"Letter of the week" is a simple routine many preschool teachers use: pick one letter, and spend the week noticing it everywhere. You don't need a classroom to do it. A few minutes a day at home is enough, and it gives your child a clear, calm focus.
Here's how a letter of the week can look at home, with free printables for the letter M as an example.
A sample week for the letter M
- Monday: meet the letter. Trace M is for Moon. Talk about the /m/ sound: "mmm, yummy!"
- Tuesday: find it. Do Find the Letter M. Watch out for N and W, which look similar.
- Wednesday: hear it. Do Listen for /m/. Which pictures start with M?
- Thursday: make it. Build an M with playdough, blocks or crayons.
- Friday: celebrate. Have an M snack (melon, muffins, mango) and look back at the week's pages.
What your child practices
- Writing: tracing big M and small m.
- Recognition: finding M and m among other letters.
- Sounds: hearing /m/ at the start of moon, map and mitten.

Tips for a letter of the week routine
Choose the order that suits you. Some families go A to Z. Others start with the letters in their child's name, or with easy sounds like M, S and T.
Keep the daily part tiny. One page or one activity a day is plenty.
Use the whole house. Put an M sticky note on the fridge, the mirror and the door. Notice M on food packages at the store.
Skip weeks if you need to. Holidays, colds and busy weeks happen. The routine is there to help, not to add pressure.
