Patterns are everywhere: stripes on a shirt, day and night, the beat of a song. Spotting and continuing patterns is an early math skill, and it's also a big part of reading and music later on. These free pattern worksheets for preschool start simple and slowly get harder.
What your child practices
- Noticing what repeats.
- Predicting what comes next, the heart of pattern thinking.
- Three kinds of patterns: AB (sun, moon, sun, moon), AAB and ABB (apple, apple, ball), and ABC (sun, cloud, moon).
How to use the pattern pages
- Say the pattern out loud, like a chant: "sun, moon, sun, moon…"
- Ask what comes next. Saying it often makes the answer obvious.
- Circle the picture on the right side of the row.
- Draw it in the empty box if your child wants to.

Woodland Patterns Sequencing Worksheets
40 woodland pages for ages 3–6: AB, AAB, ABB and ABC patterns, what comes next and before, size ordering, with an answer key.
Which page first
Start with AB Patterns. When that's easy, try AAB and ABB Patterns, where one picture repeats twice. ABC Patterns are a good challenge for older preschoolers and kindergarteners.
Pattern activities without paper
- Clap patterns. Clap, clap, stomp. Clap, clap, stomp. Your child copies and continues.
- Bead necklaces. String beads in color patterns.
- Snack patterns. Line up crackers and cheese: cracker, cheese, cracker, cheese.
- Block towers. Build towers in red-blue-red-blue patterns.
- Pattern spotting. Look for patterns on clothes, fences and tiles.
