Sight words are very common words such as the, and, is and you. Many of them show up in almost every sentence, and some don't follow the usual phonics rules, so children learn to recognize them quickly as whole words. Knowing a handful by heart makes early books much easier to read.
These free kindergarten sight words worksheets help your child read, trace and write twelve common words, four at a time.
What your child practices
- Reading common words quickly without sounding them out each time.
- Writing the words by tracing them letter by letter.
- Writing from memory on an empty line after tracing.
How to use the sight word pages
- Read the word together and use it in a short sentence: "I see a dog."
- Trace and say each letter, then read the whole word again.
- Write it. Write the word on the empty line below, then read it once more.
- Use it right away. Look for the word in a favorite picture book.

How many sight words at once?
Start with three to five words. When your child reads them quickly for a few days in a row, add two or three new ones. Keep reviewing the old words so they stay fresh.
