Tracing is a bridge between scribbling and writing. A dotted or dashed letter shows your child where to start, which way to go and when to stop, so they can focus on the movement without having to remember the shape at the same time.
This page has three free tracing worksheets for preschool: numbers 1 to 5 and 6 to 10, each with pictures to count next to the number, and a D is for Dog letter page. For more letters, see our alphabet worksheets.
What your child practices
- Correct starting points. Most letters and numbers start at the top.
- Stroke direction, which makes writing smoother and faster later.
- Recognizing letters and numerals while tracing them.
- Pencil control along a guided path.
How to use the tracing pages
- Trace with a finger first, then with a crayon or pencil.
- Say it while you trace: "Number 1: start at the top, straight down."
- Count first on the number pages. Count the pictures next to each number, then trace it. Younger children can trace two or three, not the whole row.
- Finish with a free try on blank paper. It's okay if it looks different from the traced one.

1–10 Number Tracing Worksheets for Kids
Ten pages, one per number from 1 to 10, with tracing boxes and a picture to color.
Letters or numbers first?
Either is fine. Many children are excited about the numbers in their age or the letters in their name, so follow their interest. Tracing a few letters and a number or two in one short session also works well.
Helpful tips
Warm up with pre-writing lines. If tracing letters feels hard, practice straight lines, curves and zigzags first. See our pre-writing tracing lines.
Watch the grip, not the neatness. A comfortable grip and the right starting point matter more than straight lines.
Reuse pages. Sheet protectors and dry-erase markers turn one printout into weeks of practice.
