Fall is full of things preschoolers love to collect: crunchy leaves, acorns, little pumpkins. You can turn every walk into a counting game and every pile of leaves into a lesson about colors. These fall activities for preschool pair three free worksheets with simple ideas for outside.
What your child practices
- Counting and writing numbers with maple leaves.
- Comparing groups: which group of acorns has more?
- Color words: read red, orange, yellow, brown and green and color fall pictures to match.
How to use the fall pages
- Count the Leaves. Count each row and write the number in the box. Younger children can say the number and you write it.
- Which Has More Acorns? Count both groups and circle the bigger one. Ask "How do you know?" and let them explain.
- Color the Fall Pictures. First color each circle in the key, then read the word under each picture and color it.
- Bring the pages outside. Find a real leaf or acorn that matches a picture on the page.

Fall activities to do outside
- Leaf hunt. Collect leaves and sort them by color or size at home.
- Acorn counting. Count acorns into an egg carton, one in each cup.
- Leaf rubbings. Put a leaf under paper and rub over it with the side of a crayon.
- Nature line-up. Line up leaves from smallest to biggest.
- Pumpkin patch math. At the store or farm, count pumpkins and find the biggest one.
A note on small objects
Acorns and small nature finds can be a choking hazard for young children. Stay close during sorting and counting games, and put the collection away when you're done.
